Education

Bolton Hospice is a key provider of palliative care education. We provide a variety of quality education to a broad range of care staff who are aiming to make a difference to the lives of patients and families wherever they are being cared for.
Our aim & key beliefs
The Hospice is committed to providing an effective learning environment and promotes the education of our own staff and other professionals through formal and informal teaching sessions, study days and work shadowing.
We remain committed to ensuring that education is available to all staff, and that this education is interesting, relevant and most importantly ensures we equip staff to provide an excellent standard of palliative care to the people of Bolton.
The Hospice works collaboratively with the Community palliative Care Educator in seeking to maintain education as a priority, monitor the palliative care education needs of local health and social care professionals, and direct the delivery of palliative care locally in line with local and national priorities.
Who is the education for?
We work collaboratively with care workers and professionals, at all levels, who support and work with people with palliative care needs. An important part of our collaborative working is the multi-professional education and training which the hospice provides for staff working in other healthcare areas such as hospital, community and nursing/residential homes.
Our programmes and courses are designed to meet the needs of a variety of practitioners, working in different care settings and from different backgrounds.
What do we provide?
Bolton Hospice aims to be responsive to the needs of the healthcare workers of Bolton. Our education programmes draw on the expertise of many members of the palliative care team here and include updates on symptom management, bereavement, communication skills and spirituality.
We run a regular Monday Education session 1.30-2.30 which aims to address key palliative care issues in a relaxed and interactive environment. The sessions are run on a ‘drop-in’ basis and are open to any staff caring for patients with palliative care needs.
The current programme has a ‘Foundations in Palliative Care’ theme. Please click here to view.
The Hospice will be delivering the ‘Opening the Spiritual Gate’ study day over four dates in 2012. This full day course aims to explore the spiritual needs of patients and build skills and confidence in assessing and planning care around patients' individual needs.
Please click here for dates and more information regarding booking.
We provide regular placements for medical, nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy students from a number of universities, and contribute to the training of doctors wishing to specialise not only in palliative care but also in oncology, medicine for the elderly and rehabilitation medicine.
We have recently begun offering day placements to care agency/residential home staff whereby individuals work alongside our experienced Clinical Support Nurses in understanding the fundamentals of palliative care and the important role they play in the assessment and care of patients requiring care at the end of life.
