"I volunteer in memory of my husband"
We are highlighting the crucial role their volunteers play and how they help to raise vital funds in our charity shops.
Ursula has dedicated more than 10 years of volunteering in memory of her late husband Mark, who received compassionate end-of-life care.
Mark was admitted to the hospice following a nine-week battle with metastatic cancer. Ursula recalls the moment he was admitted. "Ten years ago my wonderful husband Mark died in the hospice. He was diagnosed with metastatic cancer only nine weeks earlier, and had been in hospital since then. Mark was then given some respite care at Bolton Hospice, with the hope that he would come home, but unfortunately that didn't happen. Mark's time in hospital had been frantic and distressing for everyone, but that soon changed when he was admitted to Bolton Hospice.”

Mark arrived at the hospice on Friday evening and by Saturday morning phoned Ursula to say how wonderful a place he had been brought o.
The care provided allowed Mark’s family to spend precious time together.
“The two weeks before Mark’s passing, we as a family shared new memories and spent precious time together. He was pain free and comfortable, their consultants were there for us all, answering any questions we had. It’s a wonderful place that provides an amazing service to all the family!”
Since Mark died, Ursula has continued to support us by volunteering at one of our charity shops. “Me and my family have continued to support the hospice as they cared and supported us all so well,” Ursula states “That’s why I choose to volunteer, and I’d recommend it to anybody.”
