Volunteering helps support care for local people living with life-limiting illnesses and their families.

Afsha Ahmed started her volunteering journey at Bolton Hospice helping with administration once a week for three hours at a time. 

Once a similar, salaried position became available she applied and secured a role as an Education Administrator.

Afsha believes volunteering has bridged the gap between her experience of workplace technology before and after lockdown. 

"I think volunteering gives you a lot of confidence. I’d lost a lot of confidence in my workplace skills after a career gap to raise my children.  It was difficult thinking about coming back into work and even applying for jobs. I thought, ‘I’m not employable anymore - how is this ever going to happen for me?’

Technology moves so fast. Even though I’d worked with computers before, it had been a long time, and I didn’t feel confident about all the new systems and updates. Volunteering made me realise that I do still have those skills - and that I’m building on them too.

One of the telling things for me is that I always want to come in. Even as a volunteer, I felt like part of the team. My team would ask for my opinion, and that made me feel so welcome.
