Earlier this month, 10 year old Jack, his dad and his uncle took on a 109 mile bike ride to fundraise for Bolton Hospice. 

The trio cycled from Bowness-on-Solway to Tynemouth, a four-day trip with elevations equivalent to cycling up Scafell Pike from sea level…twice!

When asked what got him through the challenge, Jack responded: “My legs!”.

“I really enjoyed it; it was a good challenge.

One of my favourite parts was once we’d got to the top one of the big hills, it was downhill for about 4 miles then.

Dad cycled with all the bags and Uncle Steve was in charge of navigating and looking out for potholes.  We had hand signals to warn us about things like that.

We checked the Just Giving page along the way – seeing the total go up really motivated us!  My friends were all tracking it at home, too.”

Battling steep hills and busy road traffic, Jack, Mick and Steve were cheered on by several other tourists along the way, who also donated.

Jack’s dad, Mike, explained that “it was good to put Jack’s talent to good use”.

“We’d packed for every scenario – heatwaves, thunderstorms, punctures, injuries – but thankfully everything went smoothly.

We’re lucky that we haven’t had a personal experience with Bolton Hospice, but we wanted to support them as it’s a place that means so much to our local community.”

So far, the trio have raised £1795 for Bolton Hospice, with monies still being counted.  You can donate here

Jack is planning to make the most of his summer holidays for now, but one day hopes to cycle John O'Groats to Land’s End – an 874 mile journey.
